It’s been nearly five years since the Porsche Taycan burst onto the electric performance car scene and the German marque has decided that it’s high time it received an upgrade. With over 150,000 Taycans sold across the globe, the facelift for 2024 will aim to keep the Taycan at the forefront of the electric performance car market, competing against rivals such as the Tesla Model S and the upcoming Lotus Emeya.

While only Porsche aficionados will spot the external changes, the hardware under the skin has received the most significant upgrades. There’s more power and improved range across all models thanks to new battery and motor technology. Buyers will still be able to order the Taycan with a choice of bodystyles, motor configurations and performance levels, although prices have risen over the outgoing model.

What’s new for the 2024 Porsche Taycan?

The 2024 Taycan rides on the same basic platform as the outgoing car, with a choice of two battery sizes, but range and performance are improved across the board. The entry-level model, eponymously named ‘Taycan’, will now travel up to 421 miles on a single charge when fitted with the larger Performance Battery Plus, a 108-mile improvement over the outgoing model.

This increase in range is thanks to a larger battery capacity – the Performance Battery Plus has grown from 93kWh to 105kWh. Despite its bigger size, the new battery will charge faster than the old one, with charging speeds peaking at 320kW. In the real world, this translates to a 10-80% recharge in as little as 18 minutes – around four minutes faster than the outgoing model.

The improved battery technology is used in conjunction with a new, lighter electric motor that produces up to 107bhp more than the outgoing one, depending on the specific Taycan model. The base rear-wheel-drive Taycan (without the Performance Battery Plus) now produces up to 429bhp, while the top-spec dual-motor Turbo S model puts out a mighty 939bhp – some 188bhp more than before. The result is much-improved acceleration, with the Turbo S hitting 62mph from a standstill in just 2.4 seconds.

Elsewhere, all Taycans now get active air suspension fitted as standard, along with revised thermal management for the battery, more powerful regenerative braking and a new heat pump.

What about the exterior and interior of the 2024 Porsche Taycan?

The Porsche Taycan’s visual upgrades are less severe than what’s happening underneath. Its basic shape remains the same, but there is a pair of new headlights with LED matrix technology sitting above a slightly reprofiled front bumper. The rear is unchanged, other than new Porsche lettering under the light bar, which will now illuminate if you tick the right option box. All cars come with aerodynamically-optimised wheels and the previously optional auto-opening charging port cover is now fitted standard.

Inside is a similar story – the layout is unchanged, but there are a few enhancements to build upon the outgoing model’s interior, which we are already greatly fond of. The digital user interfaces for the central infotainment screen and optional passenger display have had a rethink, and there are new layouts for the digital driver’s display. The new upholstery and trim options we saw in the new Porsche Panamera have made their way to the Taycan, too.

Porsche will continue to offer the Taycan in three bodystyles: the regular Taycan four-door saloon, the Sport Turismo estate and the Cross Turismo, which is an off-road-focused variant of the estate body.

How much will the 2024 Porsche Taycan cost and when can I order one?

Prices start at £86,500 for the entry-level, rear-wheel drive Taycan, rising to £161,400 for the spiciest Turbo S model. That base price represents a £7,300 bump over the cheapest outgoing Taycan. Middle-tier 4S and Turbo models cost £95,900 and £134,100 respectively. Those needing extra boot space will have to pay £800 extra for a Sport Turismo model, or £1,100 for the Cross Turismo. The first 2024 Taycans will reach dealers this spring.
