Hi! I was wondering for some unfathomable reason what your thoughts are on actors in wigs. I'm not talking so much about actors who have to don a particular toupee for a particular historical role, but more those who tend to pass it off as their own hair, more or less.

Sean Connery is the obvious example. Well, maybe not, because half the time he's his baldy self, but was he already in a wig in the early Bonds? I know that he had serious baldy bits in THE OFFENCE and ZARDOZ at the start of the '70s.

Ray Milland had a boyish charm. Even in the mid-'70s he had that boyish charm, but that was due to his unconvincing rug. And, curiously, whenever he had to play the grumpy elder statesman, he took it off.

I remember that even as far back as THE PERSUADERS, Tony Curtis was a bit thin on top. Then suddenly, in more recent times, he was always seen in a huge bequiffed white Mr Whippy thing. I think he's back to his baldy normality now.

Not many people know that Christopher Lee has been bald since the late '50s. He always got a bit annoyed if people thought it wasn't his real hair. But when Billy Wilder asked him to go baldy for THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, what could he do? This was Billy Wilder! So he is baldy in that film. Thereafter Lee went back to wearing his Dracula wig, hoping we'd forgotten about his head in the Wilder film.

So, what actors do you think look quite charismatic without much hair, and which ones do you think really need that extra thatch on top? I'm asking this because I'm a bit baldy myself.

I was actually surprised to learn a few years back that William Shatner used to wear one dating back to the original series of Star Trek!

Shatner's perpetual refusal to be honest has long made him the subject of deserved ridicule.

What about Nic Cage. Perhaps if he wasn't bald he wouldn't be subjected to all the awful wigs he's worn in his last few movies. I mean - every single movie - awful hair.

Max Gail who played Wojohowitz on Barney Miller. Always had pretty good hair...then in the last season he changed his toup - the color and the style, and it was so obviously a toup after that, I always wondered why he didn't go back to the one that looked good.

It is probably not universally known that the actor Fred MacMurray also wore a toupee from at least the 1950s onwards. Watching his 12 year run as the father Steve Douglas on the fondly remembered sitcom classic "My Three Sons" (1960-1972) (and long thereafter) you would never have guessed.

When George Burns had his big career revival in the early 1980s, he was very candid about it.
He said something like, "I get home, I put my hair on the block, I look like hell, the block looks terrific."

I think both Nicolas Cage and Bruce Willis wear convincing toupees quite often. Except for the one the blonde version wore in Willis' Surrogates, but that was the point and it was funny.

There's a funny story about Shatner's toupee that some people don't know. He played an outlaw in a episode of "Gunsmoke". and got involved with a fight scene with actor Roger Ewing (Thad Greenwood), who gave him a good left to that jaw that knocked off Shatner's hat, and as a result his toupee got lopsided as he fell to the ground! (this can be seen on the episode).

I'm reminded of that great John Wayne story. I think I read it here actually. Something like -

"Mr Wayne, is that your real hair?"

"It's real alright - but it ain't mine."

I think Travolta's weave is sewn into the plastic mask.

You may be right, CinemaScope - perhaps Travolta's ol' blue eyes ARE sewn into the mask along with the weave.

Peter Falk said that he stored his toupee on top of one of his Emmys! LOL Gotta love that unpretentious attitude.

I've read that a lot of performers like Connery, Sinatra, Falk etc. didn't care whether people saw them without their wigs offscreen. They have an air of indiference about it. The wig's merely a prop, because apparrently society couldn't handle a bald leading man whereas it apparently adored vain, self-conscious ones.

If there's anything that'll make me laugh hard, it's those moments on Match Game when Charles Nelson Reilly would occasionally lift his hat, and the hairpiece stayed attached to it as he made a funny face. Still kills me. I love "in" bald humor. Carl Reiner did some good gags on that, too.

Check out James Drury in later years of The Virginian....is that a rug or a very bad hairdo? Either way, it is annoying to watch....although my husband and I have some laughs over it when he watches the reruns several evenings a week. Hilarious!
