Country Gravy Recipe

If you have ever had a good sausage gravy recipe, then you know how irresistible a dish like this is. Sausage gravy is a hearty, satisfying breakfast or brunch recipe that pairs amazingly well with biscuits, English muffins, pancakes, and even fried foods like fried chicken or chicken fried steak.

My recipe for sausage gravy is the best sausage gravy recipe you will ever try, and that's a promise. It has the richest, buttery flavor, with sweet sage sausage and a tasty kick of steak seasoning.

Give it a try over some crispy biscuits in the morning with a cup of coffee, and you're guaranteed to have a good day. The best part is it's ready in 15 minutes in just one pot, so you don't have to worry about a load of dishes or the time spent making it.

What is Country Gravy?

It is a white gravy recipe using the same ingredients as a classic country gravy - butter, flour, milk, and seasoning - in addition to sausage. It is a classic southern breakfast recipe generally served over biscuits, also known as biscuits and gravy.

My sausage gravy recipe consists of breakfast sausage, butter, flour, maple syrup, milk, steak seasoning, garlic powder, salt and pepper, and red pepper flakes (optional).

Country Sausage Gravy Ingredients

  • sage breakfast sausageor other ground breakfast sausage of your choice
  • butter
  • flour
  • maple syrup
  • milk
  • Chicago steak seasoningor steak seasoning of your choice
  • garlic powder
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • red pepper flakes to taste, if desired

How to Make Country Gravy

  1. Add sage sausage to a large skillet over high heat on the stove, or to your Instant Pot set to saute mode. Break up and cook the sausage until browned.
  2. Stir in butter and mix well until it melts. Then, add flour and stir until you can't see the flour anymore.
  3. Gradually add milk and stir well. Let it cook a minute or two before adding more milk. When adding more milk, add it slowly and while stirring.
  4. Let it cook another minute or so before adding maple syrup, salt and pepper, steak seasoning, and garlic powder.
  5. Allow it to bubble and thicken until it reduces into a gravy. When it sticks to the back of your spoon and is nice and thick, you know it's ready. Optionally, season with red pepper flakes.

Instant Pot Sausage Gravy Recipe

  1. Set Instant Pot to saute mode and add ground breakfast sausage. Cook until browned, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add butter to the sausage and mix it in until it melts completely.3 Tablespoons butte
  3. Stir in all-purpose flour until fully mixed through and you can't see the flour anymore.
  4. Slowly pour in milk, stirring frequently. Do this slowly so the milk does not curdle.
  5. Add maple syrup, garlic powder, and a pinch of pepper. Mix, then cook another 2 minutes before adding steak seasoning and salt and pepper to taste. If desired, add red pepper flakes for spice.

I love serving this recipe over Air Fryer Biscuits!

How to Season Sausage Gravy

  • Salt and pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Steak seasoning
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)

By using this mix of seasonings, plus maple syrup, the flavor of my country gravy recipe is incomparable. The steak seasoning really brings it all together! I use Chicago steak seasoning, but you can use any you have on hand or like best.

Sausage Gravy Recipe FAQs

How do you thicken white gravy?

Sausage gravy can be thickened by adding more flour, though the ratio of flour in this recipe is perfect as-is and will give you the perfect consistency.

Can sausage gravy be made ahead of time?

Sausage gravy is even better if you make it ahead of time. Make it up to 2 days in advance, then reheat over low heat in a saucepan on the stove.

What is the best way to reheat country gravy?

Reheat sausage gravy over low heat on the stove for best results. Pour just a little bit of milk into the pan with the leftover gravy and allow it to heat through. Stir as necessary.
